The story of Tengu eating the moon comes from the folk legend of China. Following are one common version: A funny story happens between Tengu and the moon on a full moon night in China. According to legend, Tengu was very jealous of the moon's beauty and brilliance and wish to get the light and power of the moon. One night, a group of Tengu has combined forces to jump into the sky and steal the moon. They formed a large row of forces and went towards the sky and put an attack on the moon. But no matter how hard they worked, they really couldn't touch the moon. Because the moon always floats high in the sky. After a long effort, Tengu realized that they can't really steal the moon. So they changed their strategy and decided to express their respect for the moon in another way. Tengu tons are arranged in a circle and each bite the next Tengu tail to create a giant ring chain. As many Tengu completed the chain, they started jumping and spinning at once. This movement reveals a view of Tengu chewing the moon when viewed from the ground. People are surprised and enjoy the performance of Tengu while looking at the sky. The story shows that Tengu can't really get the moon, but they have a way to express respect and wish to the moon. It also serves as a treasure to cherish the beauty and mystery of nature and teach the importance of accepting an unchanged reality.
